Health & Safety in the workplace is of paramount importance. Most people are probably aware of this to a certain degree; but what does this actually mean?

This actually covers an enormous variety of aspects, ranging from ensuring that the conditions under which an employee performs his or her normal duties meet the agreed standards, across to the safe careful management of hazardous substances.

It encompasses many aspects of the Law as well as other directives from either The HAS or the European Union. Clearly this is quite a complex area and yet every employee has a right to know and trust that their working environment is safe.  Your Union has the right to appoint a suitably trained H&S in each workplace in which it has members working. In a profession such as teaching where members from several different unions work alongside eachother in the same workplace, this could lead to a proliferation of Union H&S representatives.

To help avoid this situation, in Merton, through the Merton Joint Teacher’s Council, there is a local agreement with the teaching unions that instead of having a H&S rep in every school, it is better to have a Joint Union Rep who acts on behalf of ALL Teaching Unions and schools in the Borough.

Having recently completed the necessary training, Terry Davis (of Rutlish School), is the newly appointed H&S rep holding this important post within Merton.
